Today for preppylove readers I have an interview with a woman who probably needs no introduction: the amazing Carly Heitlinger of my absolute favorite blog ever, College Prep. A recent graduate of Georgetown, she took a little time to answer my questions and give us some insight into a blogging powerhouse!
1. What have been some of the most rewarding moments for you with your blog?
I have met some of my best friends through blogging. Actually, one of my really good DC friends was the first person to ever "recognize" me! She saw me in an airport and introduced herself; we kept in touch and a great friendship evolved. Meeting other bloggers has also led to fantastic friendships. We have so much in common so it's always fun to meet up. Some of them don't live in the same city as me, but we're all so tuned into the internet that we stay in contact ALL the time!
The process of writing has also been a great release for me. That's originally why I started blogging, and definitely why I will continue to blog. My freshman year was a major struggle, but writing (even if no one was reading) was the best thing to happen to me. It helped me survive that year and has continued to help me better myself! While working with companies, meeting new people, and traveling have all been great opportunities, writing is really my favorite part!
2. What are your top five style must-haves?
Ballet flats
Button ups
Skinny jeans
Chino shorts
Printed skirts
3. What inspires you with your blog and with your style?
I try to find inspiration from everywhere... except for other blogs. I always go for originality and great execution. (Why would someone want to read my blog if I've copied another blogger's style? They've already read it from someone who does it MUCH better!) I keep a list with me at all times to jot down future ideas for posts. I always ask myself, "Is this something that would interest me if I were to read it?" If the answer is no, it's abandoned!
I really try to find clothes that make me feel comfortable. If I don't feel comfortable in something, even if it's the cutest thing in the world, I won't wear it. Feel good is important to me!
4. How do you balance all the things you are involved in?
If I had to choose one "overarching" theme in my life, it would be trying to find balance. I'm constantly evaluating and re-evaluating how I handle different situations. I think I will always be searching for better balance... but I think ultimately, it's the ebb and flow of work life and personal life that makes everything worth it. I truly love working, so sometimes I forget that I need to have a life outside of my work. I try to schedule fun events with friends or just relaxing with my family to break up big bursts of work!
5. What do you see in the future of College Prep?
I see constant growth. I try to improve my posts, my writing, my photography, and my designs all the time. It's honestly so much fun for me and my blog gets better as a result!
Congrats College Prep on your graduation! If you aren't following Carly's blog, you really must. She is a constant style and life inspiration. Here is her Facebook group too.
